Travel vlogger caught in the Russian invasion of Ukraine
British travel vlogger ‘Bald and Bankrupt’ has over 3M subscribers on YouTube for his videos exploring former soviet lands and his latest videos show that he was exploring the Ukrainian-Russia border when Russia invaded Ukraine.
The first video (below) details his travels along the Ukrainian-Russian border right up to one day before the invasion. He catalogues the calm atmosphere and nobody appears to really believe that Russia is about to invade.
The second video (below) has a much more urgent tone. ‘Bald’, as his subscribers call him, is trying to flee the city with his companion, filming all the way. His footage shows Ukrainians sleeping in the subway for protection against bomb blasts, train conductors allowing people on without tickets in order to get them out of the city and the tense yet jovial atmosphere of Ukraine and its people during this time.
On the overcrowded train, he even manages to conduct a taste test of some homemade alcohol with some native Ukrainians as they laugh and joke and pass the time running from Kyiv, before hopping on a former Soviet train.
