Writing about ways to earn “passive income” is the biggest trend on Medium right now. Every day, my inbox is full of suggestions for articles about making money online and writers claiming to make thousands of dollars using passive income only to find out, when you click in, that the sources of their income aren’t passive at all and actually require some work to set up, manage and get a decent return on.

So here’s my big secret to how I make $2,000 a month in passive income; I don’t. There is no such thing as passive income. All income streams, even the ones that could be described as “set and forget”, need to be set. There is no such thing as a truly passive income stream.

I do work for myself and I make my money online. I create content, I write and I sell my skillset. I also use a number of websites and services that are often included in these ‘passive income’ articles; hence how I know they are not, in fact, passive. Here are the sites I use to make money online that you can too — as long as you enter into it understanding that they’re not passive, and will take work.
